Ripples of Hope: Boston June 29th through June 30th, 2009

In light of the unprecedented challenges facing our country in the Summer of 2009, Ripples decided to stay closer to home to make a difference in our own community. Over 125 volunteers joined Ripples of Hope for the 2-day service journey which served some of the most economically challenged communities in Boston.

Service Partners:
Pine Street Inn/Park Street House Inn Project

Developed an outdoor community garden space by clearing a lot, constructing and painting benches, planting flowers and trees, and painting a colorful mural; community residents can now enjoy the outdoor space and have taken ownership to maintain it.

Revitalized a vegetable garden so that residents will be able to enjoy fresh vegetables throughout the summer and for years to come; residents have worked hard to sustain the garden

• Painted a colorful mural inside the house, as well as other indoor painting projects.

• Worked with residents to spruce up their living spaces by painting name signs for their room doors and decorating planters for their rooms.

• Prepared a community lunch with the residents.

Boston Center for Youth and Families/Tobin Community Center Project

• Cleared a long-neglected green space in the back of the community center;

• Created a community gathering space by building benches, rehabbing old picnic tables and benches;

• Cleaned and planted around stage area so that the community can have concerts through out the year;

• Painted colorful murals and blacktop games with kids;
